Elizabeth Rumsey

Vielle, viola d'arco, viola da gamba

Elizabeth Rumsey (Viola da gamba, Vielle, Lirone) began her musical studies at the Sydney Conservatorium, after which she moved to Europe to pursue further study on the viol. This led to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Baroque Viol with Rebeka Ruso, Renaissance Viol and Vielle with Randall Cook), where she passed the final recital with honours. Her main repertoire is music of the 15th and 16th centuries, with a particular interest in consort music, especially for viols. She plays with several viol consorts (The Earle his Viols, Sestina, Concerto delle Viole, Ensemble Dedalus) and also plays in several other specialised instrumental ensembles, including a broken consort and an Italian early Baroque continuo ensemble. Apart from the consort work, she plays vielle, Renaissance and Baroque viol and lirone with various ensembles in and around Switzerland and in Australia (Chant 1450, Leones, Le Miroir de Musique, Profeti della Quinta, Orchestra of the Antipodes among others), and has made many CD and radio recordings.
